Harry and Meghan's romcom return

STUFF
Harry and Meghan's London arrival looks all too familiar.

OPINION: When the eyes of the world are on you, and you've recently had a fall from popular grace, there's really only one thing to do – get that Insta-worthy shot that will set the world to swoon – and the cynics reaching for a sickbag.

Perhaps it was kismet, or a perfect configuration of the stars that led to what was caught on camera, but Harry and Meghan's rain-soaked entrance at the Endeavour Fund Awards in the UK has certainly got the public back on their side after Megxit delivered maximum irritation to the tabloids and the hoi polloi.

In truth, from the light shining through the back of Harry's umbrella, illuminating every single droplet of rain to the duo as they gazed adoringly into each other's eyes, the picture by Samir Hussein could have been ripped from a romcom.

Nothing is more Hollywood memorable – and guaranteed to wrench open a place in the hearts of the world, shaken by the loss of the Royals from their shores.

The internet's littered with lists of rainy romantic moments – even if the actors involved were probably freezing their proverbials off as the director shouted "More rain" while desperately trying to capture the shot destined for infamy.

While Harry and Meghan were only walking to the Awards' front door, (see above for the walk set to slow-motion video with swelling orchestral sounds), the internet has exploded with loud adulation of their love.

But maybe Harry and Meghan missed their moment to seal the deal.

After all, if Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man can score an upside down kiss from Kirsten Dunst's MJ having pummelled his way through a litany of villains in an alleyway, maybe Harry could have got a peck on the cheek for not lashing out at the tabloids that he's not so fond of?

Perhaps he could have taken a Nicholas Sparks approach to declaring their love.

In case you hadn't noticed, Meghan was wearing a similar blue dress to ole Rachel McAdams in the swooniest of romantic celluloid moments from The Notebook – it wouldn't have taken much for Harry to ditch the umbrella and hoist her up around his waist for the pash. After all, they're not fully bound by Royal protocol after stepping back, are they?

It is, of course, an easy obvious comparison to match up the upper class Brit with his American amour.

Hugh Grant stuttered his way to a soaked kiss with Andie MacDowell in Four Weddings. Just imagine the sharp intake of breath had Meghan sealed that movie lead she wanted by turning carefully to the press and asking "Is it still raining? I hadn't noticed" as the sound of a thousand flashbulbs pinged lightly in the background after he planted one on her lips.

It may be cliche, but that's why Hollywood's always embraced the kiss in the rain. The frisson of lust and desire as the elements swirl around, unencumbered by surroundings, being swept up in the moment, focused only on the one you're with – it's hard to achieve when the eyes of the world are ogling your every move.

That's possibly why this picture has gone some way to re-sealing the deal for Harry and Meghan, a couple held in such esteem but whose ride out of the public eye has been anything but smooth.

There may have been no Trevi Fountain nearby, no Breakfast at Tiffany's style doorfront to rush from and no boombox to raise high in the sky – but by carefully embracing elements of romcom cliche, Harry and Meghan's fairytale storybook may just have got another page for the ages.

Yes, it is still raining. And yes, we did notice.
