Miss Universe NZ was 'amazingly terrible'

Harlem-Cruz Atarangi Ihaia, from Napier, won Miss Universe New Zealand 2017 on Saturday night.

The battle to be Miss Universe New Zealand took place on Saturday night, and unsurprisingly, viewers had plenty to say.

Twenty women were vying for the crown in the Grand Final, held at the SkyCity Theatre, televised on Bravo and streamed live on YouTube.

Harlem-Cruz Atarangi Ihaia, a child supervisor from Napier, came out on top, taking home the crown and a brand-new Honda Jazz.

Some loved it, going so far as to call it a "world class event".

But it wasn't all smooth sailing: the two-hour finale featured an accidental 'nip-slip', sound issues, and the winner's sash being presented early.

One viewer said the show was "amateur" and "embarrassing to watch".

Another viewer said the commentator mispronounced contestants names and sounded confused and disorganised "just as the whole show was".

Others questioned the ethics and efficacy of the voting system.

And people seemed to be confused as to whether they were watching Miss Universe New Zealand, an infomercial, or a game show.
If people agreed on one thing though, it was that Ihaia was the rightful winner.
