Qantas offers streaming services Foxtel, Netflix and Spotify on domestic flights for free

Have you ever wanted to Netflix and chill in the sky? Well now you can, for free.

Passengers on board Qantas domestic flights will now be able to stream television shows and music via Netflix, Foxtel and Spotify.

The subscription services will be made available to customers on flights which have the new inflight Wi-Fi service enabled.

Qantas claims the Wi-Fi will have speeds up to 10 times faster than conventional Wi-Fi services. The service will be switched on its first aircraft in late February. The faster connection speeds will enable audio and visual streaming.

While Netflix, Foxtel and Spotify are paid subscription services, they will offer free access to passengers on and off the aircraft.

This will be a boon to those who don't currently subscribe to Foxtel, as they will offer their service via the app, free, for three days every time a customer flies. No sign-up to a subscription is required.

Netflix and Spotify will require customers to sign up to a subscription to enjoy the services, though Netflix will offer new customers access to their services as part of a free 30-day trial (which they currently offer all non-subscribers). Similarly, Spotify will offer a 30-day trial of its advertisement-free Premium service, which is also offered to all new subscribers.

Existing subscribers will be able to log in to their accounts and access the services during flights as they would normally.

Last November, Qantas installed satelite-receiving equipment on its first 737 to be Wi-Fi enabled. This is currently undergoing hardware and software testing before it is switched on for customers to be able to use.

The rest of the domestic Boeing 737s and Airbus A330 aircraft will follow later this year.
