Police officer tackles man off motorbike outside Auckland bar

Police officer tackles man on motorbike

The moment a police officer leapt from his car to tackle a man off his motorbike in central Auckland has been filmed on camera.

Dan Wood, a bartender working at a Kingsland bar, captured the scenes unfolding across the road from him on Wednesday.

The footage shows the police officer jumping out of his car and tackling the man off his motorbike outside the Portland Public House.

A bartender captured the moment a man was tackled off his motorbike by a police officer outside a Kingsland bar.

Wood posted the video to Facebook at about 8pm on Wednesday and it has so far had more than 100,000 views and 700 shares.

He said the bikie was kicked out of the Portland Public House a week earlier for being violent.

On Wednesday, he returned to the bar.

A bartender was allegedly threatened and ran into Citizen Park, a bar across the road, to seek shelter.

"He flipped tables, manhandled customers and smashed a window and then jumped on his bike," Wood said.

Police chased the man on the motorbike around Kingsland.

"For some strange reason he came back down the road, grabbed one of the beers and then got back on his bike," Wood said.

Wood, who studied film for a year started filming the incident but didn't expect the police officer to jump out of the car.

"It felt really good, this is how we do it in New Zealand, we don't need guns or violence just a good tackle."

Wood said overall bars in Kingsland weren't the target of violence but there had been an influx in the last two months.

A police spokeswoman said the man on the bike was wanted following an earlier incident.

Following the tackle he was arrested and charged with several counts of assault, reckless driving, failing to stop for police and resisting arrest.

The man will appear in court on Thursday.
