Pamela Anderson upset at China airline in Auckland

Last updated 21:29 13/02/2014

Former Baywatch star Pamela Anderson has been in New Zealand this week, filming an ad but also speaking out on animal rights, an activist group says.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) says  Anderson touched down in Auckland on Monday and leaves tomorrow after a low-key trip to film a commercial.

Anderson has been vocal on animal rights issues for some time and is said to now be speaking out on the ethical treatment of primates, which some airlines ship for laboratory testing.

Peta  Asia-Pacific campaigner Ashley Fruno said, ‘‘Pam hasn’t really wanted any attention while she’s in the country. She made an exception because she learned about China Southern Airlines being in New Zealand and wanted to speak out.’’

Many airlines have banned carrying primates for laboratory testing but Peta  says China Southern continues the practice.

Peta released a letter from Anderson which reads: ‘‘I am writing to urge you to have a heart for animals this Valentine’s Day and stop shipping monkeys to their deaths in laboratories.

"Having recently learned from my friends at Peta that China Southern Airlines is one of only two major airlines in the world that still ships monkeys to laboratories, I spotted a China Southern plane when I flew into Auckland Airport earlier this week and couldn’t help but wonder whether any terrified monkeys were on board.’’

The letter says Anderson will avoid the airline until it ends shipments of primates to labs.

China Southern Airlines did not return calls for comment.
