Last updated 14:30 15/05/2013

CALEB HARRIS

A woman has been airlifted to hospital with a serious injury after being knocked down and trampled by a mob of sheep at a remote Tararua property this morning.

The woman, 53, was moving the sheep at her property in Huia Rd near Pongaroa when they knocked her over. The rescue helicopter was called soon after 11am.

The woman "badly injured" her lower leg, according to Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter pilot Chris Moody, who attended the incident.

Moody said paramedics stabilised the woman at the scene of the accident before she was transported in the back of a ute to the waiting helicopter and flown to Palmerston North Hospital.

A hospital spokesperson said the woman was "perky" on arrival at the hospital's emergency department.

An ambulance crew from Pongaroa and a Rural Fire Brigade also attended the incident.

Pongaroa police Senior Constable David Kirk helped prepare a landing site for the helicopter in a paddock near the woman's house and said the response to the situation had been efficient.
