Chris Pine charged with drink driving
Celebrated Hollywood actor Chris Pine is facing a charge for allegedly drink-driving while in New Zealand.
Pine, 33, was stopped by police apparently after leaving the Z for Zachariah wrap party, held at The Blue Pub in Methven, Canterbury, early on March 1.
He allegedly failed an evidential blood test.
Pine is famous for playing Captain James T Kirk in Star Trek and the title role in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.
He will appear in the Ashburton District Court on Monday charged with driving with excess blood alcohol.
Pine has been in New Zealand filming Z for Zachariah alongside Australian-born star of The Wolf of Wall Street, Margot Robbie, and Oscar nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor, star of 12 Years A Slave.
The Blue Pub manager Casey Crawford told The Press today that Pine had "seemed fine" before he left the wrap party about 2.30am.
Pine brought his "supermodel" girlfriend, Iris Bjork Johannesdottir, with him to the function. He drank beer and she had glasses of sauvignon blanc, Crawford said.
The Z for Zachariah film's cast and crew were in Methven to shoot scenes at Washpen Falls, near Windwhistle.
Crawford said the pub closed down so about 80 actors and crew could attend the February 28 party, which finished about 3am on March 1.
Crawford was surprised to learn of Pine's drink-driving charge, as the pub had organised sober drivers that night, and made all the guests aware of it.
He had known police were in the town running a drink-driving operation that night.
Crawford was on the door, but got to speak to Pine.
Pine was "cruisy" and "well-spoken". He did not appear intoxicated, Crawford said.
"He looked like he just wanted to spend time with his partner. I think she just flew in that day."
Pine also posed with bar staff for photos about 30 minutes before he left the party.
"It was a really good party. It was really well controlled. Chris was really good. They were a good crowd, the whole lot of them."
"A lot of locals outside got a photo with him."
Crawford understood Pine had stayed in Methven that night, but did not know where.
"I thought he was really friendly. A really, really nice guy.
"We had transport organised. If something happened to him, he probably thought he was fine to drive. I thought he was."
Pine's co-star, Robbie, also attended the function.
Police issued a statement today after news of the charge broke.
"A 33-year-old American national was stopped during a routine drink-drive operation near Methven, Mid-Canterbury, early on Saturday morning, March 1," it said.
"He has been charged with driving with excess blood alcohol and will appear in the Ashburton District Court on Monday 17 March.
"Given that the matter is now before the court, police will not be releasing any further information."
Residents of Banks Peninsula, where most of the Z for Zachariah filming took place, described Pine as friendly, approachable and sociable.
Pine was born in Los Angeles, California.
His parents are former actors. His father, Robert, appeared in the police drama, Chips.
